Education of the workforce and generation of qualified employment in Sergipe

Abstract

The objective of this article is to explore the contribution of education to regional development in Sergipe by analyzing how different educational levels of the workforce impact the economic sectors of Sergipe. For this purpose, data from the Continuous National Household Sample Survey (PNADC) is used, based on an input-output model with the year 2013 as the base year, constructed through administrative records of electronic invoices. This allows for the analysis of the potential for job creation by sector and by education level in the state. The main results show that the primary sectors are the ones that employ the most workers with little or no education, while the tertiary sectors are characterized by demanding more qualified labor. Nevertheless, sectors with higher productivity are also those whose relative participation of multipliers expressed concentration at higher educational levels.

Atualmente é professor Adjunto do Departamento de Economia da Universidade Federal de Sergipe (DEE/UFS), Coordenador do Laboratório de Economia Aplicada e Desenvolvimento Regional - LEADER, Bolsista de Produtividade em Pesquisa do CNPq, Pesquisador Visitante do Instituto de Pesquisa Econômica Aplicada (IPEA) e Diretor Administrativo da Associação Brasileira de Estudos Regionais e Urbanos (ABER).

    Formado na Universidade Estadual de Feira de Santana (UEFS). É mestre em Economia pela Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS) e doutor em Economia pela Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais (UFMG). Tem interesse nas áreas de Desenvolvimento Economico e Economia Regional. Foi professor no Programa de Pós-Graduação em Desenvolvimento Regional e Urbano (PPDRU) na Universidade Salvador (UNIFACS) entre 2017 e 2021. Atualmente é professor efetivo na Universidade Federal de Sergipe.
