Abstract

The state of Rio Grande do Sul has its development dynamics strongly marked by the development of agriculture. However, different dynamics were established in the rural area of Rio Grande do Sul over time. Thus, the article aims to characterizar the processes of rural development in the state of Rio Grande do Sul from multidimensional indicators of rural development, organized in order to face rural development in a procedural way. The statistical technique used was factorial and cluster analysis. The analysis pointed out the existence of a heterogeneous situation in terms of development in the rural area of Rio Grande do Sul, with regions where the development process has been virtuous and associated with the dynamics of urbanization, and other situations in which the liability of extensive agricultural dependence, the concentration land ownership, the distance from the large consumer centers and the low diversification of economic activities led to the opposite direction.
