Abstract

This article uses the construction of “typologies” to highlight the heterogeneity of the Brazilian rural milieu and analyze the diversity of family farming, particularly among the agrarian reform settlements. These typologies were built based on information from the 2017 Agricultural Census and administrative records, with the aim of delimiting, identifying, and comparatively analyzing agrarian reform settlements in the Southern Region and discussing their contributions to rural development. The main results point to a great diversity of situations, but some characteristics are common: a) agrarian reform is a source of high occupation in the countryside: in 9 out of 10 settlements, the intensity in the use of labor in activities is greater than or equal to their neighbors; b) in terms of income generation, 6 out of 10 settlements in the south generate production values greater than or equal to their neighbors
