Introduction: Despite the decline in morbidity and mortality in Brazil, infectious and parasitic diseases (IPD) are still the main causes of death in the Brazilian population, even in the most developed areas, such as the south and southeast regions. Objective: To characterize hospitalizations due to infectious and parasitic diseases in the state of Rio Grande do Sul from January 2015 to September 2022. Methodology: The data was collected from information provided by the SUS Information Technology Department (DataSUS). For the main diagnosis variable, Chapter I of the International Classification of Diseases 10th revision (ICD-10) was considered, which includes some infectious and parasitic diseases (A00-A99; B00-B99). Results: The group between A00-A09 was the most prevalent (n=54421; 62.4%), which corresponds to intestinal infectious diseases. This group also had the highest number of hospitalizations for PID, and a death rate of approximately 2%, with significant associations between deaths and the variables year, bed specialty, race and age. The highest death rate occurred in the A90-A99 group (10%). The majority of admissions were female (n=44421; 51.0%), white skin color (n=59477; 68.2%) and in the 20-59 age group (n=33288; 38.2). In terms of hospitalizations with deaths, the B20-B24 group stood out from the others (p<0.0001) in terms of the following variables: number of nights, total amount spent on nights and total days in hospital. Conclusion: Even with the decline in morbidity and mortality from PID, it is important to monitor hospitalizations for these diseases, as well as death rates, as the figures are still worrying.
